Pleasant Local High School, also known Pleasant High School and Marion Pleasant High School, is a public high school in Pleasant Township, near Marion, Ohio. It is the only high school in the Pleasant Local School District. Their nickname is the Spartans. The High School contains about 500 students, with approximately 460 attending on campus, and another 40 students attending Tri-Rivers Joint Vocational School. Brian Sparling is the Principal of Pleasant High School, assisted by Kirk Ballinger. The Superintendent of the Pleasant Local School District is John Bruno, and School Board members are Ed Vaflor, Chris Mattix, Gary Sims, Tom Baker, and Kim Miller. Pleasant Schools remains, under this leadership, financially stable; a rarity in the public school systems of Ohio, and additionally, the high school has earned the highest rating possible (Excellent) on the State Report Card every year since the Ohio Department of Education began rating individual buildings in the 2002-03 school year. Pleasant High School offers traditional courses in all fields of study, in addition to advanced placement courses in Government and Senior English, Advanced Biology, Chemistry II, Advanced Math, Math Analysis, and four years of both French and Spanish. Additionally, Pleasant has one of the largest PSEO (Post Secondary Enrollment Option) enrollments at The Ohio State University, Marion Campus, and Marion Technical College among juniors and seniors of any area school. Students taking these college level courses have traditionally earned an A or B. The 2008 graduating class of 115 students received over a $1,500,000 in scholarships and grants. 70+ scholarships were available to the class of 2008. In the area of extracurricular activity, Pleasant offers many choices in the fine arts and athletics, as well as many clubs and organizations. Students may participate in activities such as Concert Choir, Show Choir (Spartans in Motion), Concert Band, Marching Band, Jazz Band, and Pep Band, Fall Drama and Winter Musical (performed on the Palace Theater stage). Students may also choose to participate in various clubs and organizations at the school, including Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Teen Institute, French Club, Spanish Club, and Chess Club. The district also offers special programs for talented and gifted students, as well as special needs students. Pleasant participates in mandatory initial drug testing with random testing throughout the year for all students participating in extra-curricular activities. Pleasant has won the overall Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference (MOAC) All Sports Championship 14 times (including 11 of the last 14 years) since the MOAC began in 1990. The 2011-12 season was highlighted by the football team finishing 10-0 in the regular season, winning their 17th straight MOAC title and making the state playoffs for the 17th time.
